Orange Magazine Interview

Meet Gerrit

Hey there, I’m Gerrit S. Overeem — the guy behind the Second Life of Mr. Hunt series.

By day, I’m an IT professional. But the rest of the time? I’m deep in the world of science fiction, rolling dice in tabletop RPGs, and building Star Wars costumes for comic cons and charity events. I’m an active member of the 501st Legion, where I’ve brought Boba Fett and various Stormtroopers to life over the years.

When I’m not writing or suiting up for events, I’ve been known to take on some ambitious side projects — like building life-sized Star Wars droids. My most recent build? A fully 3D-printed Droideka. It’s as intimidating as it sounds, and yes, it took forever.

My love for storytelling goes all the way back to backyard battles with Star Wars toys and weekend marathons of Buck Rogers, Star Trek, and The Bionic Man. In seventh grade, I wrote a story about ninjas that apparently no one saw coming — my English teacher still stands out for saying she’d never read anything like it.

I didn’t seriously consider writing a full novel until around 2010. A comic con lit the spark — I met a few authors who were kind enough to talk shop, and I thought, Why not me? That moment stuck. A year later, after a long drive and a weird question from a family member, I found myself sketching out the bones of a story that wouldn’t let go. It eventually became the start of my first published book.

I set three personal goals:

  1. Write and publish a novel

  2. Sell it at a comic con

  3. Have a stranger read it and genuinely enjoy it

I’ve hit all three — and what started as a single story became a full-blown SciFantasy series.

Outside of writing, I’m still a huge D&D nerd, I recently got scuba certified (still figuring out how not to look awkward underwater), and I’ve practiced martial arts like Nihon Goshin Aikido and Muay Thai. I also enjoy working out, road trips with my wife (especially Universal Studios and Disney runs), and driving my Dodge Challenger Scat Pack. Oh — and I once made blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances on Ink Masters and Manifest. Five seconds of fame. Maybe six.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll jump into the series and stick around for the ride.
